A Senior’s Guide for Summer Wellness
Let’s face it — summer is a beautiful time of year. The sunshine, the flowers, the long evenings… it’s a season many of us look forward to. But as we get older, our bodies respond a little differently to the heat and humidity. That’s why it’s so important to take extra care during the warmer months.
Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are real concerns, especially for seniors. They can sneak up on us faster than we might expect and can become dangerous if not addressed. The good news is, with just a few thoughtful habits, we can enjoy everything summer has to offer — safely and comfortably.
Drink Up – Hydration is Key
One of the simplest (yet most powerful) things we can do for our health in the summer is to drink plenty of fluids. As we age, our sense of thirst isn’t always as sharp as it used to be, so it’s easy to forget.
Try to drink at least 8–10 glasses of water a day. If you’re spending time outside or being active, aim for a bit more. And water isn’t your only option — herbal teas, fruit-infused water, and even coconut water are great ways to keep hydrated and refreshed.

Be Sun Smart
Our skin becomes more delicate with age, so we need to protect it. A good sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is a must whenever we’re outside — and don’t forget to reapply every couple of hours.
Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and breathable, light-colored clothing can help shield us from the sun while keeping us cool. Staying in the shade whenever possible is also a smart move!
Keep Moving – Gently
Staying active helps us feel better physically and emotionally, even in the heat. The trick is to choose activities that are gentle and preferably done during cooler times of the day.
Early morning or evening walks, swimming, or water aerobics are perfect summer exercises — and they’re fun too. Plus, they give us a chance to socialize, which is always good for the soul.

Eat for the Season
Summer brings us a rainbow of fresh fruits and veggies that are as nutritious as they are delicious. Berries, watermelon, cucumbers, tomatoes — they’re all hydrating and packed with vitamins.
Try to fill your plate with colorful, fresh foods. A simple salad, some grilled fish, or even a smoothie can keep you feeling energized and light on your feet.
Beat the Heat
Sometimes, the best thing we can do is stay indoors when the sun is at its peak — typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you have air conditioning, use it. If not, a fan, some cool showers, and lightweight clothing can do wonders.

In Closing …
Summer is a wonderful season — full of light, laughter, and life. With a few precautions, we can enjoy every sunny moment without compromising our health.
Whether you’re in the city or countryside, in Canada or elsewhere, staying cool, hydrated, and protected is the key to making the most of these lovely months. Let’s take care of ourselves and each other — and enjoy the summer safely.
Here’s to a happy, healthy season ahead!
